Upgrades

Many classic vehicles from any period can have well chosen upgrades carried out in such a way as to enhance the way the car can be driven, or improve its reliability. Such upgrades can be successfully completed without detracting from originality or period features of the car if completed with care or period feel if done in a careful and sympathetic way.

The Electrical System Upgrade, consisting of:

Lights:

Regardless of the age of the vehicle, it is a disadvantage if the lights are poor. Modern lights can often be retro fitted to improve the light output for safer night driving.

Battery:

We recommend replacing lead-acid batteries with a considerably more powerful, spiral cell, or “red top” battery. These high-tech batteries are generally manufactured for modern race vehicles, and are therefore more capable of dealing with long lay-offs and size for size offer a greater advantage in output. These types of battery are of course legal for race use. This type of installation can be fitted along with a main cut-off switch; an important benefit for cars which are only used occasionally – we can always fit a unit which has the necessary components to meet race regulations at a later date if required.

We use aircraft grade power cables as a matter of course. These can also be supplied to order.

Charging System:

Many classic and historic cars can suffer charging problems, which are sometimes exacerbated by modern traffic conditions. Frequently the vehicle’s battery is not charged adequately, if at all in traffic.

We can rectify this by installing a small, powerful dynator to replace a weak dynamo or early, unreliable alternator. A dynator unit is in fact an alternator inside a dynamo body. This approach allows the originality to remain but with a modern, reliable charging system.

Starting:

Original starter motors are typically heavy, underpowered direct drive units that often struggle to be reliable. We offer a starter motor refurbishment service, or where available we can offer a modern replacement starter motor.

Ignition:

Classic cars often depended on frequent adjustments and short service intervals to adjust points and replace condensers. Combine this with the fact that many of the trusted original suppliers of such components are no longer with us and you have a less reliable car.

There is an alternative, however, replacing the points and condenser in a conventional distributor with an electronic ignition unit, this will remove the need for points adjustment and any potential unreliability from a sudden condenser failure.

The next progressive step could be to replace the complete distributor assembly with an electronic distributor unit (effectively a modern mapped ignition system hidden in a conventional-looking distributor body). For those clients that wish to retain a period method of operation, let's say for F.I.A. eligibility, or for the various historic race championships, we can install high quality billet aluminium points distributor units.
